Materials:
- Salt
- Water
- All-Purpose Flour
- Red Paint
- Flat Glass Marbles – Amber Colored
How To
Add 2 parts flour to 1 part water and 1 part salt. Mix until relatively smooth. Shape into flat rocks (*it is important your rocks are not too thick to ensure they fully dry through). Use the Viking Alphabet to create words or letters on your rock.
Dry the rocks in the oven at 200* for 2 hours, flipping halfway through. You may need to add dry time if they do not feel completely dry.
Allow to cool and then paint parts of your rock red.
Learning Across Ages
Toddler & Preschool: This age will enjoy mixing, molding, and exploring the dough. They will gain simple understanding of how physical traits can change with temperature. They also will gain understanding of symbols being used to create meaning and words and be able to create process art with the paint.
*Marbles are within choking size for young children so always supervise with use.
Elementary: These children will enjoy matching the Viking alphabet to their names or special words only they can decode. The decoding skills develop critical thinking skills as well. They can enjoy learning about the importance of amber in Viking culture and how amber is formed. They also can learn about true Viking Runestones and how they can be painted using red iron oxide.
