Each month consists of an overarching science or social sciences related theme. All core subjects—including language arts, math, and sensory play—are taught through integrated themed activities, purposeful themed life experiences, and curriculum following this main theme.
Why This Method Works
Long Term Retention
Re-visiting an overarching theme sparks recollection, allowing children to make connections to something they learned in prior years. This repetition over long periods of time creates lasting memories for more impactful long-term retention.
Grasping Patterns
The repetition also helps young children to better grasp an abstract sense of time as they grow to follow the cycles that are pointed out throughout the year. This helps them naturally understand seasonal patterns and patterns of the calendar, such as months and holidays.
Fostering Consistency and Excitement
Predictable cycles build consistency and anticipation. Because children are so young when they start, they love the routine and will quickly begin saying, “When do we get to do that theme and activity again!”
Reuse of Materials
Re-visiting an overarching theme allows you to reuse many materials rather than starting from scratch each year. It also makes your lesson planning incredibly easy to keep track of because your resources are organized by when they are used—whether that’s every January, February, or March.
All Ages Learning Together (Multi-Age Homeschooling)
This method is ideal for multi-age homeschooling and implementing with all ages at once. Because your family visits similar themes together, everyone feels like they are on the same track and the activities relate to everyone.
There is enough variety within our themes to keep toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary students on their appropriate level of learning or interest while staying aligned on the same main topic. For example, when visiting a farm on a field trip:
- One child may be learning plant parts.
- Another child may be learning animal classification.
All of the topics within the larger units easily pair well together and can be used cohesively. This allows you to create more magic around the topic as you can focus your energies on similar, shared learning experiences.
Enhancement of Learning through Connection
Using the activities together enhances them. Looking at a subject from multiple angles helps concepts click faster:
- In January: Learning about freezing temperatures in a “winter” theme when also learning about the “Inuit Peoples” theme brings out many related concepts.
- In June: Learning about volcanoes in a “geology” subtheme along with learning about black sand in Hawaii under a “beach” theme perfectly relates.
Alternatively, everyone can work on the exact same subtheme at different developmental levels. For example, while learning under a Viking subtheme:
- Younger Children: A young child may mold salt dough into runestones similarly to playdough to build fine motor skills.
- Early Elementary: Another child practices the early writing strokes of curves and straight lines to try to create the Viking word on the salt dough.
- Upper Elementary: Another child practices decoding the Viking alphabet and decides what is written on the stones.
Flexible Pathways: Spiral vs. Mastery-Based
This is your homeschool, so you need to work in ways that work best for your unique family. This site offers you the ultimate flexibility to use these themed collections in one of two ways:
- The Spiral Approach: Touch into all the related themes within the monthly collections each year. By rotating through these monthly themes and repeating them yearly, your children’s knowledge spirals upward with fresh context each season.
- The Mastery-Based Approach: Focus on one specific theme each year from the monthly collection, allowing your child to deeply immerse themselves and master a single topic before moving on to the next.
