Materials:
- Cookie Tray
- White Paper
- Bleeding Tissue Paper (This specific tissue paper is important – Ask me how I know 🤪)
- Scissors
- *Optional: A Snowy Day book pairing
How To
Lay white paper onto the tray. Rip or cut tissue paper into pieces and place on top in a unique design. Grab snow from outside or ice from the freezer and lay on top. Come back in an hour and check to see how your art has changed. Pick up the white paper and allow to dry on a drying rack or safe space. Pair this activity with a melting themed book like “A Snowy Day” for extra fun!
Learning Across Ages
Toddler & Preschool: This age gains so much from using fine motor skills to rip and cut the paper, discussing new vocabulary like snow, ice, color words for the paper, melting, cold, etc., and enjoying the storyline and richness of the book. You can also discuss how your art turned out to look like some of the art in the book including using paper to create shapes and colors for the watercolor type backgrounds.
Elementary: This is a great experiment to discuss absorption, melting and melting points, and dissolving vs melting. Art can be created to mimic the story with simple shapes, layers, and using a collage style.
