Materials:
- White Paper
- Washable Markers – *Optional
- Watercolor Paints
- A Rainy Day
How To
This is one of my favorite activities to do in rain. It is the perfect mix of nature and art. Start by coloring on your paper with markers if desired. Then break out chunks of the watercolor paint set and crumble them across your paper. Lay the paper outside in the rain, holding it down with something heavy like rocks. Watch your artwork create itself when the rain falls.
Learning Across Ages
Toddlers & Preschoolers: This is such a wonderful sensory experience. Standing in the rain, watching the colors from the markers and watercolor paints bleed on to the paper is so enjoyable. Discussing the colors, the sounds of the rain, how it feels on your skin and what it is doing to the paper are all great scientific learning experiences for this age.
Elementary: Elementary students will be able to independently do this activity. They can also turn it into a science experiment to try to hypothesize what will happen when the rain touches the paper, how water absorbs, and how the colors bleed to create new colors.
