Family Style Learning
Our activities are intentionally designed to grow with your family. Lessons are designed for elementary and middle school students, but toddlers and preschoolers thrive using the exact same setups, learning through play. Because learning goals develop in complexity over time, you get more bang for your buck—utilizing the exact same supplies across all ages and through many years.
How activities are used by age:
- Infancy & Toddlerhood: Focuses on hands-on sensory and play-based exploration (touching, feeling, experiencing).
- Preschool & Pre-K: Develops language, basic concepts, and descriptive vocabulary using the same activities.
- Elementary & Beyond: Expands play and sensory based activities into formal lessons with deep conceptual understanding.
Through direct sensory experience, younger children will naturally absorb basic vocabulary and be exposed to advanced language and learning alongside their older siblings.
Materials & How To

Materials:
- pasta, washable or acriylic paint, & hand sanitizer (I love the colors and textures you can create with homemade, but these premade ones can be found for convenience here).
- The Rainbow Fish book (We used the bath book if you ever plan to add water, however I like the original much better)
- fish cookie cutter
- Blue playdough
- blue glass beads
- sand
- sequins
- sifter shovel
How To
Mix 2 cups pasta with 2 tablespoons of paint and a squirt of hand sanitizer into a Ziploc bag. Create various bags with different noodle types and different colors of paint. Zip the bag closed and spread the paint around the noodles until fully coated. Dump onto parchment paper and spread to allow to dry for about an hour.
Fill your sensory bin with the blue glass beads, dried colored pasta, blue playdough, sand, sequins, and a fish cookie cutter.
Create rainbow fish and coral reefs from your playdough, cookie cutter, and sequins. Make various playdough fish to share sequins with. Pair with the lesson plan to use the activity to more deeply learn about types of reefs and their ecosystems, types of coral, the oceans around the world, sea layers, and conservation of habitats.
