Students will explore the parts of a dandelion, the dandelion life cycle, and the ways plants can be used in everyday life through a hands-on nature-based recipe that encourages close observation of the plant. Families can make sweet memories in the kitchen as children help create and taste their own homemade floral syrup. Family Style Learning
Our activities are intentionally designed to grow with your family. Lessons are designed for elementary and middle school students, but toddlers and preschoolers thrive using the exact same setups, learning through play. Because learning goals develop in complexity over time, you get more bang for your buck—utilizing the exact same supplies across all ages and through many years.
How activities are used by age:
- Infancy & Toddlerhood: Focuses on hands-on sensory and play-based exploration (touching, feeling, experiencing).
- Preschool & Pre-K: Develops language, basic concepts, and descriptive vocabulary using the same activities.
- Elementary & Beyond: Expands play and sensory based activities into formal lessons with deep conceptual understanding.
Through direct sensory experience, younger children will naturally absorb basic vocabulary and be exposed to advanced language and learning alongside their older siblings.

Materials:
For the dandelion syrup:
This will make around 2 cups of syrup.
- a yard full of yellow dandelion heads. (you will need 5 1/2 cups, loosely packed, of only the yellow petals)
- 6 cups of water
- juice of 1 lemon (approximately 2-3 tablespoons)
- 3 1/2 cups sugar
- stove, small pot, & spoon
- mesh strainer
- cheesecloth
- tea or pancakes to enjoy the syrup with
For the science experiment:
- 2 or more long dandelion stems (they will want more to keep playing)
- a bowl of water
How To:
Dandelion Syrup Recipe
- Go flower picking for as many yellow flowers as you can find. Then separate all the yellow florets from the green base, saving only the florets (the green part is bitter).
- Create a tea by cooking the florets, water, and lemon on medium heat for 1 minute.
- Cover and let the florets steep in the fridge overnight.
- The next day, strain the florets out using a mesh strainer and cheesecloth. Ensure you save the liquid and discard the florets.
- Add the liquid to a small pot again, add sugar, and gently simmer for 1 1/2 hours or until it is reduced by half.
- Enjoy your floral syrup over pancakes or with tea!
Dandelion Science Experiment
Take a long dandelion stem and place it into a bowl of water. Peel another dandelion stem lengthwise and place the peeled parts into a bowl of water. Then watch the magic happen!
